Warning to women over 50 on ‘easy’ clothing mistake that makes you look ‘frumpy’

Women above the age of 50 have been advised not to make one “easy” clothing mistake by a fashion expert.

Fashion influencer Deirdre Nicholas has uploaded a video on YouTube to share her anti-ageing style tips.

In it she suggested that women over 50 should always avoid wearing overly boxy outfits as it can make them look “dumpy and frumpy.”

However, she emphasised that ageing is a positive process and encouraged women to always wear what makes them feel happy and confident.

She cautioned that some common “traps” mature women encounter that can make them appear older than they are, reports GB News.

Giving her style expertise to her viewers, Deirdre advised women over 50 to stop wearing “all boxy-shaped items”.

Although it’s understandable since these types of clothing are often very comfortable and can help conceal areas a woman might feel self-conscious about, she reckons that pairing boxy items may not create a youthful appearance.

She explained: “One thing that is often attached to looking a bit more mature, shall we say, is looking a bit dumpy and frumpy.

“And this can happen very easily if we wear all boxy-shaped items – top and bottom at the same time.”

The fashionista warned that this is “particularly a problem with skirts”, warning women that pairing a square-shaped jacket with a similarly shaped knee-length skirt is a no-go.

This is because it can lead to a “square, frumpy look”.

According to Deirdre, pairing a boxy jacket with cropped trousers can also be a style misstep, as “this combination can appear unflattering and make us look shorter.”

However, this doesn’t mean women over 50 need to overhaul their wardrobes and get rid of all their boxy pieces.

Instead, it’s about reconsidering how to style these items. Deirdre suggested that the “best approach” is to “balance the look.”

She said: “If you love a boxy top, try wearing it with closer-fit trousers or with a midi-skirt, just to change the proportions a little bit.”

Similarly she advised that a boxy jumper could be worn with some flattering, tailored trousers.
