‘The holiday treat you didn’t know you needed’ now streaming free | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Netflix has just introduced the ideal remedy for the long, chilly nights leading up to Christmas.

Despite its ‘ridiculous’ plot and Hallmark-esque cheesiness, this whimsical love story is winning hearts, according to critics and viewers alike.

Featuring Lacey Chabert of Mean Girls fame, it’s a must-watch for fans of other festive favourites like The Princess Switch and 2022’s Falling For Christmas, which stars Lindsay Lohan, a former co-star of Chabert.

Upon its debut, it scored a flawless 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with 11 reviews, although that has since dipped to a still commendable 88%.

While Hot Frosty may not sway the most hardened Christmas sceptics, it’s sure to bring a smile to any subscriber seeking some holiday romance and self-aware charm.

Chabert portrays Kathy Barrett, a widow and proprietor of Kathy’s Diner, whose life begins to crumble following the death of her handy husband.

Her life takes a magical twist when she stumbles upon a snow sculpture competition in her hometown of Hope Springs, and a sexy snowman mysteriously comes to life, reports the Mirror.

Despite the absurd premise, many critics were charmed by the knowing humour and captivating performances from Chabert and Dustin Milligan, who plays the hunky snowman, Jack.

The Guardian didn’t mince words, describing a whimsical cinematic experience: “It’s a sincerely stupid idea executed sincerely, with seemingly complete buy-in from all involved that yes, this is a movie about a snowman with abs. I’ll take that type of brain freeze, for now.”

Mocking yet magical, The Wrap shares its view: “It’s cheap and it’s silly and it has a laughable premise that some people will mistake for terribleness.

“But it’s also winking and whimsical,” adding “It knows what it’s doing and it’s doing it on purpose. Somehow it actually kind of works.”

IGN Movies delivered an upbeat critique: “a self-aware Christmas rom-com with calculated ‘shirtless moments,’ Hot Frosty is frothy entertainment that isn’t supposed to be taken seriously.”

One Rotten Tomatoes audience member couldn’t resist praising the festive film: “Hot Frosty is the holiday treat you didn’t know you needed.

“This movie isn’t going to win any major awards for anything – writing, direction, or acting.”

They continued, “However, this movie knows exactly what kind of film it wants to be and who its main audience is. Move over Hallmark, because Netflix has nailed the formula for so-bad-it’s-oh-so-good by treating this film with kindness.”

A Letterboxd user was surprisingly charmed, saying: “Assuming it would be the same quality as most Netflix Christmas romcoms I figured it’d be background viewing while I wrapped presents.”

They confessed, “Well, here I am 90 minutes later and not a single thing wrapped because it really won me over with the sheer silliness and fun performances.

“The story is, of course, ridiculous. But I think that’s the point, something ridiculous and silly but filled with Joy and positive vibes. Perfect casual Christmas watching.”

Adding to their festive traditions, they’ve also vowed they’ll be “rewatching” Hot Frosty for years to come, making it a must-add to your yuletide viewing repertoire.

Hot Frosty is now streaming on Netflix.
