People are only just realising they’re ‘eating kiwis wrong’

Fans of kiwi are baffled to learn that they are eating kiwis wrong.

While many people peel the fuzzy outer layer, experts are now suggesting you should be eating the skin too for the sake of your health.

In a recent viral Tiktok video, Hollywood actress Jenna Ortega was seen munching on a kiwi like an apple, skin and all.

The video was captioned: “Today I realised you can eat kiwi with the skin on.””

It sparked a wave of reactions – including gastroenterologist Dr. Joseph Salhab, known online as “Stomach Doc”.

He shared the clip, adding that eating the kiwi with the skin on can provide significant health benefits.

“If you eat a kiwi with the skin on, you actually get 50 percent more fibre and more vitamins and nutrients,” Dr Salhab said.

“But you’ll want to wash it really well and get some of those little hairs off,” he added.

Though the idea of eating a kiwi whole has raised some eyebrows, it’s gaining traction among health-conscious fans.

Kiwi skins are rich in fibre, antioxidants, and vitamin C, which are crucial for health and even have anti-aging benefits.

By discarding the skin, you’re potentially missing out on these perks.

While some people are intrigued by the potential health boost, others can’t get past the texture.

“I can’t. The fuzzy skin freaks me out,” one person commented.

But Dr. Salhab has a suggestion for those put off by the fuzz.

“Sungold kiwis have a smoother surface,” making them easier to eat whole.

Despite the hesitation, some brave souls have tried the technique and loved it.

“Tastes so much better with the skin,” one person said, while another chimed in: “I tried it, it didn’t taste of much, but it was hard to chew. Might have to cut into smaller pieces.”

Dr Salhab agreed, recommending slicing the fruit into smaller, circular pieces to make it more manageable.

In addition to providing fibre, kiwi skin can help promote healthy bacterial growth in the gut, aid in digestion, and even prevent constipation.
