One of the best Oscar-winning films of the 21st century is leaving Netflix soon | Films | Entertainment

It usually takes a few decades for a film to be considered among the very best of all time.

Yet one made just 10 years ago is now entering lists of the best movies ever made.

La La Land Oscar winner Damien Chazelle was just 29 years old when he wrote and directed Whiplash.

The psychological drama starred Miles Teller as an ambitious jazz drummer who is pushed beyond his limits by his abusive teacher and mentor at a New York music school.

The critically acclaimed box office smash shot in just 20 days explores perfectionism and whether what it takes to be the best is truly worth all the sacrifices.

Nominated for five Oscars, including Best Picture, Whiplash took home Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Supporting Actor for JK Simmons in his career-defining role as the ruthless jazz instructor Terence Fletcher.

In 2020, Empire ranked the film 13th in the magazine’s Top 100 greatest movies of the 21st century. Earlier this year, 500 filmmakers and critics voted in a poll that had the movie come out on top of the greatest Sundance Film Festival entries of all time.

The last day you can watch Whiplash on Netflix UK is November 30.
