Science has shown that scent is one of the first things we notice when meeting someone new or entering a home. Naturally, we’d want our homes to exude the same luxurious aroma as our favourite perfumes.

However, with perfume prices soaring in recent years, investing in a new fragrance can be a significant decision. For those who prefer to test a scent at home before committing to a purchase, and to make their home smell amazing at the same time, Eflorist has shared an easy and affordable hack to create a luxurious ambiance.

Eflorist’s flower experts suggest creating your own aromatic air freshener using essential oils and bicarbonate of soda, which can be bought for as little as 65p. Simply add one tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda to a small bowl or dish, reports Lancs Live.

If you wish to display the air freshener, you might opt for a dish that complements your home decor. But, any small container will suffice.

Next, mix five to six drops of essential oil into the bicarbonate of soda until thoroughly combined. The bicarbonate of soda alone will absorb odours and freshen the air, while the addition of essential oils will infuse your home with a delightful and refreshing scent.

The experts at Eflorist have analysed the world’s top five best-selling perfumes to reveal how you can recreate their scents in your home using flowers and their extracts.

1. Dior – J’adore

Characterised by notes of orange blossom, jasmine grandiflorum and centifolia rose, Dior’s J’adore fragrance is hailed as the ultimate feminine floral by the House of Dior. To infuse your home with the scent of J’adore, Eflorist suggests combining orange blossom, jasmine, and cabbage roses into a bouquet, or using these essential oil scents in your homemade air freshener.

2. Frederic Malle – Portrait of a Lady

Frederic Malle’s Portrait of a Lady fragrance boasts Turkish rose, raspberry, black currant, and cinnamon, complemented by hints of clove, patchouli, and sandalwood. A bouquet featuring damask roses will capture this perfume’s primary scent, while a mix of salvia blackcurrant flowers and carnations will evoke the blackcurrant and clove notes that define this iconic scent.

3. Kilian Paris – Love Don’t Be Shy

Kilian Paris’ Love Don’t Be Shy fragrance blends diverse notes ranging from neroli to orange blossom and even marshmallow, with jasmine and rose forming the middle notes. To craft a bouquet inspired by this fragrance, consider flowers such as jasmine, roses, and bower flowers to encapsulate the main notes.

In addition to the sweet marshmallow aroma from the bower flowers, you can even buy marshmallow essential oils to add to your homemade air freshener.

4. Maison Francis Kurkdjian – Baccarat Rouge 540

Baccarat Rouge 540 has become one of the most sought-after perfumes in recent years, boasting notes of jasmine facets, saffron, and freshly-cut cedar. This fragrance has also taken TikTok by storm, with videos racking up millions of views. Baccarat Rouge 540 is frequently replicated, with many creators promoting cheaper alternatives to bypass the hefty price tag.

Online, a 200ml bottle can set you back almost £500. Geranium, a flower known for its cedar-like scent, is recommended by Eflorist for inclusion in your bouquet. Alternatively, you could opt for cedarwood essential oils. Other additional flowers and fragrances include jasmine, and the saffron crocus (also known as the autumn crocus).

Ariana Grande made her mark on the fragrance industry in 2015 with her debut perfume, ARI, followed by Cloud in 2018. With its notes of lavender blossom, juicy pear and bergamot, this perfume has remained a best seller for the past seven years.

To create a bouquet inspired by the Cloud scent, include lavender, freesia for the pear scent, or a pear essential oil, and bee balms (also known as monarda) – a common flower known to smell of bergamot.

According to data from Grazia, other perfumes (besides the ones already mentioned) that are also among the world’s best selling include: Glossier You, Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium, Giorgio Armani Si, Lancôme La Vie est Belle and Le Labo Santal 33.
