Avengers Doomsday reunites Captain America star Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr | Films | Entertainment
It was only a matter of time before Captain America star Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr returned to the MCU after 2019’s Avengers Endgame.
The last time we saw the pair, Iron Man died, and Steve Rogers was old, having gone back in time to marry Peggy Carter.
Evans has already made his Marvel comeback this year in Deadpool and Wolverine, reprising his Johnny Storm from the Fox Fantastic Four movies.
Meanwhile, Downey Jr returns to the MCU in 2026’s Avengers Doomsday and 2027’s Avengers Secret Wars as the villain Doctor Doom.
And now the latest news is that Evans has been cast in the first of these back-to-back Avengers films.
According to The Wrap, Evans will appear alongside Downey Jr ’s villain in Avengers Doomsday. However, given the number of different options, it’s unclear what role the actor will portray. Aside from elderly Cap and Human Torch, he could play a Captain America variant, which may even be an evil HYDRA version.
It’s also possible that like Downey Jr, Evans has been cast in an entirely new role. What with the Marvel multiverse, anything seems to be possible casting-wise.
Avengers Doomsday, directed once again by The Russo Brothers, is set to release in UK cinemas on May 1, 2026.
