Simple change to thermostat could save more than £100 on energy | Personal Finance | Finance

UK energy customers could potentially save over £100 on their heating bills by merely reducing their thermostats by a small degree. According to Citizens Advice, lowering the thermostat by just 1C can result in approximately a 10% saving on energy bills.

A study from University College London, which analysed thermostat readings from 13,000 homes nationwide, discovered that maintaining temperatures between 22C and 18C could save an average household around £130. The study further revealed that for every square meter covered in a household, the average home used about £1.10 less in gas and 40p less electricity when the thermostat was lowered by 1C.

However, the amount saved will depend on factors such as the size of your home, the external temperature, and the duration the heating is on.

To ensure warmth and health, the NHS advises keeping homes at a minimum of 18C. It also recommends closing windows on chilly winter nights as inhaling cold air could increase health risks and the likelihood of chest infections.

The NHS suggests wearing multiple thin layers at home, with clothes made from cotton, wool, or fleecy fibres being effective at retaining body heat. It also emphasises the importance of wearing well-fitting slippers and shoes with a grip to prevent slipping while staying warm.

Citizens Advice also recommends that those with health conditions that could worsen in cold temperatures should not set their thermostat below 21C.
