Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe stars in new film with James Bond actor | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV
Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe is set to star in the upcoming high-stakes thriller The Amateur, as revealed in a newly released trailer.
Best known for her role as time-travelling nurse Claire Fraser in all seven seasons of the popular Starz series, Balfe will be swapping 18th Century Scotland for contemporary espionage come next April.
Anticipation for her new role is mounting, especially with the second half of Outlander’s seventh season just around the corner.
With only the eighth and final season of Claire’s adventures alongside Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) left, fans are eagerly awaiting any new projects from the beloved duo.
Fortunately, they won’t have to wait long to see Balfe embody another strong female character, reports the Daily Record.
The gripping crime drama begins when CIA decoder Charlie Heller (Rami Malek) seeks revenge following the mysterious murder of his wife (Rachel Brosnahan).
Malek, the film’s lead, is recognised for his recent role as Lyutsifer Safin, Daniel Craig‘s adversary in No Time To Die, and his Oscar-winning portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody.
Balfe briefly appears in the trailer, seen driving a car in what seems to be a high-speed chase.
Her character’s identity and their part in the film remain under wraps for now, but it’s clear she’ll be at the heart of the action.
She’s positioned prominently in the cast list, just after Malek, Laurence Fishburne, and Brosnahan, so Outlander enthusiasts should anticipate her to have a substantial part.
Yet, prepare for a departure from the benevolent healer Claire, as The Amateur will showcase the Irish actress in a more intense and action-packed role.
The synopsis for the eagerly awaited thriller states: “Charlie Heller is a brilliant, but deeply introverted decoder for the CIA working out of a basement office at headquarters in Langley whose life is turned upside down when his wife is killed in a London terrorist attack.
“When his supervisors refuse to take action, he takes matters into his own hands, embarking on a dangerous trek across the globe to track down those responsible, his intelligence serving as the ultimate weapon for eluding his pursuers and achieving his revenge.”
Fishburne, an icon from The Matrix, also stars, cautioning Charlie in the trailer against the perilous journey of vengeance before he decides to go rogue.
The impressive supporting cast includes Jon Bernthal, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, Adrian Martinez, and Danny Sapani.
The film is adapted from a celebrated crime novel by renowned author Robert Littell and directed by James Hawes, acclaimed for the Anthony Hopkins-led biopic One Life and his work directing episodes of Slow Horses and Black Mirror.
The Amateur is in cinemas on April 11.
