A pet enthusiast has issued a warning about one popular dog breed, describing it as so ‘chaotic’ that it should come with a warning label.

Choosing the ideal canine companion can be a challenging task. Each breed is different and comes with pros and cons, whether it’s the lovable labrador, petite chihuahua or larger-than-life Great Dane.

However, those contemplating getting a Bernese Mountain Dog might want to reconsider, according to one Instagram user. The account @doglifetoday1 described the dogs on the social media platform as “a breed so clumsy and chaotic they should come with a warning label.”

The video continued by saying: “These lovable giants roam the earth like overgrown toddlers,” before highlighting some of the problems these dogs can cause.

“First off, let’s talk about their sheer size. They’re like an express train made of fur, lumbering through life with the grace of a hippo on roller skates.”

Male Bernese Mountain dogs can grow up to 27.5 inches (70cm) at the shoulder, while females can reach 26 inches (66cm), according to the American Kennel Club. They can weigh up to 8.2 stone (52kg).

The video further stated that these dogs have an impressive zest for life, “rivalled only by a toddler with a sugar rush.”

“Let’s not even mention the breath,” the video added. “Oh dear heavens.” The Instagram account also cautioned potential pet owners that Bernese Mountain Dogs would necessitate a lot of clean-up due to their constant shedding.

“They don’t just shed, they […] disperse fur like a confetti cannon at a bad wedding,” the video continued.

While the video claimed the breed also has the brain power of a “bag of rocks”, Bernese Mountain dogs are considered very intelligent and can be easy to train with the right approach. Due to their smarts, they require ample mental stimulation to prevent boredom and potential mischief.

They’re sensitive creatures too, responding far better to positive reinforcement than negative, as harsh treatment can hurt their feelings. Despite these quirks, people are quick to sing their praises.

One commenter chimed in: “Absolutely, but my Bernese is absolutely the loveliest family member. Honestly, Bernese are so incredibly loyal, sweet, caring..”

However, others highlighted another significant concern prospective owners should bear in mind: the breed’s health. “Adorable but will break your heart,” one chimed in.

“[They] die younger and get weirder stuff wrong with them than any other breed I know,” another added. Bernese Mountain dogs typically have a life expectancy of seven to 10 years, which is less than the average dog lifespan of 10-13 years.

These dogs are also full of playful energy and known for their goofy antics, which can make life with them quite lively. They tend to be friendly towards strangers and other dogs, and they exhibit a deep loyalty to their families.
